PEG's "One Laptop per Child" New Member Drive

Become a member

There are two ways to particpate in PEG's "One Laptop per Child" New Member Drive which involve becoming a member. You either donate a laptop and become a member, or become a member and we make a donation.
  1. Get a new individual membership ($75), PEG donates $15 (20%) to One Laptop per Child

This is the easy one; just become a PEG member, and we will donate $15 to the One laptop per Child foundation in support of their efforts. We have often noted that, in North America alone, there are at least 1000 people who are PEG subscribers who are not members. We'd like to change that. One thousand new members would generate $15,000 or 75 laptops.
  2. Give a laptop ($200), get a free membership ($75)

This is a bit more tricky, you have to send me proof of your laptop donation (yes, I know what they look like). When we receive proof that you donated a laptop, we will issue a PEG membership in your name, good for 1 year. Send the proof to me at Greg dot Higgins at peg dot com .

There are currently two ways to give a laptop, one of which is available only to residents of the US and Canada and which is only good until December 31, 2007, so there isn't time to waste. That program is OLpC's Give One Get One Program. In this program, you spend $400, you get one of the laptops for yourself (or a child) and a laptop is given to a child somewhere in the world where it is needed. Give One, Get One - USA and Canada only - through Dec 31

The other way to give a loptop, and this is available to everyone and doesn't expire, is to just Give a Laptop. It doesn't get any simpler than that. When you Give a Laptop OLpC will send you a receipt. Forward that receipt to Greg dot Higgins at peg dot com and I, in my capacity as PEG Manager, will issue you a PEG membership good for 1 year.

Co-Sponsors

PEG is seeking matching and supporting co-sponsors for our "One Laptop per Child" New Member Drive. Matching co-sponsors agree to match PEG's $15 contribution with a $15 or more contibution of their own. Supporting co-sponsors contribute $5 to PEG for each free membership given by PEG. A co-sponsor may be an individual or an organization and may elect to be a matching co-sponsor, a supporting co-sponsor or both.

For estimating purposes, based on our readership numbers, PEG believes there is the potential for 1000-2000 new members. However, based on previous membership drives, we think that 100 is a more plausible number. This is one of those times when we'd like to be wrong.

To become a co-sponsor, contact Greg Higgins, PEG Manager at Greg dot Higgins at peg dot com .
  1. Matching co-sponsors

Matching co-sponsors support the "Get a membership" program above by matching PEG's $15 contribution with a $15 or more contribution of their own. Matching co-sponsors receive a monthly statement from PEG's CPA with number of new memberships during that month and instructions on how to make the matching contribution to OLpC. (Since OLpC is a 503(c) organization, and PEG is not, we want to be careful to preserve any tax benefits a co-sponsor might receive. [ These details are still being worked out. ])

With 13 matching co-sponsors, each new membership will generate a laptop for a child; with 27 co-sponsors, each new membership will generate a laptop for 2 children.
  2. Supporting co-sponsors

Supporting co-sponsors support PEG by contributing $5 or more for each free membership PEG gives out for a donated laptop. Supporting co-sponsors are billed directly by PEG. In the event that supporting co-sponsors are generating more than $60 for each free membership, PEG will donate the excess to OLpC.
